Magnesium hydroxide

Magnesium hydroxide is preferentially used as a flame retardant in every technically possible application because of its price attractiveness.

Magnesium hydroxide has a pH-value of 10 in combination with BET-surface of 13 m2/g. This results in a high reactivity in all formulations and Mg(OH)acts as scavenger of acidic flue gases in every flame retardant system and especially in halogen-containing systems such as for example PVC formulations.

Magnesium hydroxide is temperature stable up to approximately 300°C. It is recommended for products with compounding and/or processing temperatures of more than 220°C, where aluminium hydroxide should no longer be used. Magnesium hydroxide can be used without any problems in polypropylene at processing temperatures of approximately 250°C. For applications, in which the high alkalinity of magnesium hydroxide is not useful, Magnesium hydroxide - Hydrophobic represents a hydrophobic speciality.
